Acne is a very common skin problem affecting both women and men worldwide. Acne occurs due to various reasons. It can be genetics, diet, stress, infections or hormonal changes.

There are various chemical and natural treatments for acne available in the market. The former requires professional supervision or else it can cause more damage. This article presents the top remedies that you can try to get rid of this issue safely and effectively.

Understanding the Types of Acne

Depending on the root cause, the type of acne also differs. Before treating acne, it is important to know what type you are suffering from so that the relevant remedy can be implemented.

The major types of acne are:

Acne Vulgaris: This is the common form of acne, which is the presence of any pimple. It happens in the face, shoulders and back.

Comedones: It is when a hair lesion gets clogged with dead skin cells and oil. It appears like a small bump. Blackheads, whiteheads and papules are all types of comedones.

Pustules: These are inflamed pimples. They look like whiteheads with a red ring around the pus-filled bump.

How to Get Rid of Acne

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is the fermented byproduct of apple cider. It has the potential to fight different types of bacteria and is rich in organic acids. One of its major compositions is citric acid, which is extremely beneficial for treating acne. Moreover, it also contains lactic acid, which helps reduce acne scars. 
How To: Mix apple cider vinegar and water in a 1:3 ratio. Cleanse your face and apply this solution with a cotton pad. Keep it for 15 minutes and wash it off. Repeat it one or two times a day based on the severity of acne.

2. Honey Cinnamon Mask

Honey has been found to effectively kill Propionibacterium acnes or P. acnes, the bacteria that causes acne. Cinnamon also has anti-bacterial properties. Using them together helps kill the growth and treat existing acne.

How To: Make a paste of 1 tbsp cinnamon powder and 2 tbsp honey. Clean your face and apply it. Keep it for 15 minutes and wash it off. 

3. Saffron, Neem and Multani Mitti Pack

Neem is well-known for its anti-bacterial properties. Multani mitti also has anti-bacterial and astringent qualities. Saffron has crocin and safranal compounds that help fight bacteria. Moreover, Multani mitti and saffron are useful to treat pigmentation and dark spots. A mix of all these three helps treat acne and reduce the dark acne spots and scars. 

How To: Mix 2 tbsp of Multani mitti or fuller earth with 1 tbsp neem powder and a few drops of saffron extract. You can use water or rose water. Apply the pack on a clean face and, keep it for 15 minutes and then wash it off.

4. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is another potent way to reduce acne. It is an essential oil extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia leaves. It helps the skin build long-term bacterial resistance as well. 

How To: Tea tree oil can be used as a diluted solution for spot treatment. Body Shop’s Tea Tree oil is distilled and can be used directly. You can take a few drops on your clean fingers and apply them to the acne.

5. Green Tea

Green tea is rich in antioxidants and everyday consumption can help reduce acne. It is also good for health. Green tea has polyphenols that help fight bacteria and lower skin inflammation. 

How To: There are two ways to use green tea. The quicker acne treatment method is to use a green tea extract directly on the skin. You can also go for organic green tea creams. The second way is to incorporate freshly brewed green tea into your diet. 

6. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is extracted from the leaves and bark of witch hazel shrubs. It is found in many acne facewash and similar products. It fights all the major causes of acne, inflammation, bacteria and skin irritation. 

How To: Mix equal parts of witch hazel bark and water and soak it for 30 minutes. Bring it to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Cool and strain the liquid. Apply it once or twice a day as needed on a clean face using a cotton ball. Store it in a cool and dry place.

7. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera produces a clear gel, which is a key ingredient in many acne face masks, creams, and cleansers. Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It also adds glow and smoothens the skin texture. It is also useful to treat rashes, wounds, and burns. Aloe vera is high in sulphur and salicylic acid, two components that help fight acne. 

How To: You can scrape off the gel from an aloe vera plant and apply t on your face as a moisturiser. You can also purchase readymade aloe vera products. 

8: Garlic

Garlic is known for its medicinal qualities. It is also quite useful in treating acne based on its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. 

How To: Make a paste of two or three garlic cloves with rose water and apply it to the areas where you have acne. Keep it for five minutes. Then wash off. If you have sensitive skin, use one clove of garlic. 

You can also consume a clove of garlic on an empty stomach every morning instead. This will help clear your skin and also has other health benefits.

Acne is a common skin condition that can happen at any time. With quick and effective treatment, you can easily get rid of it. However, remember that acne treatment is not just about applying products. It is also about maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, getting proper sleep, and reducing stress. 
The above-mentioned remedies will help reduce existing acne and acne scars. But with a proper lifestyle, you will target the root cause and prevent acne from occurring.
